You may have seen the “60 Minutes” interview with Howard Buffett and clips from the World Food Program’s 10th Annual George McGovern Leadership Award Ceremony and global hunger conference at the U.S. Department of State but World Footprints is sharing the complete highlights.
This event honored the contributions made by Howard Buffett and Bill Gates to global hunger efforts and it included keynote remarks by Vice President Joe Biden, a presentation of the awards by Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton—a 2010 George McGovern Leadership Award recipient, and a panel discussion on private sector management.
Members of the panel included: Howard G. Buffett; Dr. Rajiv Shah, administrator, USAID; Greg Page, chairman and CEO, Cargill; and The Honorable Dan Glickman, former Secretary of Agriculture. The panel was moderated by Betty Liu of Bloomberg News.

East Africa is suffering from the worst drought in 60 years, putting more than 11 million people in danger of malnutrition and starvation. The crisis is devastating lives, and on Wednesday the U.N. declared parts of southern Somalia to be in a state of famine.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Mark Bowden, the U.N.’s top official in charge of humanitarian aid in Somalia, said the country “is facing its worst food security crisis in the last 20 years. This desperate situation requires urgent action to save lives…It’s likely that conditions will deteriorate further in six months.”

Jedidiah, a humanitarian-based fashion brand, has collaborated with Bulldog Drummond, an innovation and design company, on an eight-piece T-shirt collection to raise money to help fund World Vision’s efforts in Japan.
World Vision has deployed an assessment team to northern Japan from Tokyo led by a Japanese emergency response manager with experience in Haiti, Pakistan, Myanmar and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. This team reached the city of Sendai within 48 hours of the devastating quake and Fukushima on Tuesday, and is coordinating with local government officials and partner organizations to determine how to start relief operations to support children and their families.
