The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies has recently provided the following updates for those who will be traveling to the National Mall and around Washington, D.C.  Additional programming information and a link that provides on-line streaming of events is also listed below.

Getting to and around Washington, D.C.

Travel options in and around Washington, D.C. will be very limited. Plan your route to and from events in advance and allow plenty of extra time due to extremely heavy traffic. Since driving around inauguration time will pose numerous difficulties consider using public transportation.From the Airports

  • Motorists will only be able to drive to Reagan National Airport via Route 1 in Virginia. Possible alternatives to reach the Airport on January 20 are Metrorail*, taxicabs* and SuperShuttles*.

  • Baltimore Washington Airport authorities advise, “Travel on the road network in and out of the Washington, D.C. region will be extremely difficult on Inauguration Day.” MARC Trains provide service to the BWI Rail Station with free shuttles and will operate special reserved schedules on Inauguration Day. Commemorative tickets for reserved MARC service cost $25 (including round-trip passage and a commemorative program booklet).

The Presidential Inaugural Committee* – includes information on how to get tickets to events, how to become a volunteer for events, and even how to get a temporary job during the inauguration. You can sign up for email updates at this site.

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies* – provides information on 2009 inaugural events including swearing-in tickets, parade, balls, email updates and important key topics, such as accessibility, security, prohibited items, etc. You can sign up for email updates at this site.

 The U.S. Secret Service* – includes information on what you can expect on Inauguration Day and a list of items that will be prohibited and allowed into the security areas.

The District of Columbia’s Inauguration* – includes valuable information about the events surrounding the Presidential Inauguration, including lodging information, transportation, security measures and closures. You can sign up for text alerts at this site.
