Sailing the Potomac Aboard the Minnie V

We were experiencing record-breaking heat on a particular day in Washington, DC so the sight of the Skipjack Minnie V provided the promise of a little relief.  As we boarded this historic vessel it was like we were stepping into history.

The Minnie V was built in 1906 on Deal Island in Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  She is a beautiful looking vessel but her sleek design and functionality was crafted for work and not speeds.  For 87 years the Minnie V dredged oysters along the East Coast.  After a brief stint with the Living Classroom Foundation in Baltimore, the Minnie V continues to work offering sailing excursions on the Potomac River from Maryland’s National Harbor.

When the Captain ordered the sail to be hoisted the 60-foot high canvas situated on the towering mast caught a nice welcoming breeze which sent us down the Potomac.  For 90-minutes we enjoyed calm Potomac waters, a gentle breeze, refreshments and wonderful company.  The Minnie V treated us to an escort of bald eagles and jetliners headed towards Reagan National Airport.

Our scorching hot day ended with a relaxing evening and beautiful sunset aboard the Minnie V.
