From long, uncomfortable trips to challenging accommodations, humanitarian travel isn’t typically glamorous. Massachusetts-based social documentary photographer and Capture Humanity founder Matilde Simas recently traveled to Imvepi Refugee Settlement in Uganda to explore the ways that children are exploited due to war.
Somewhat of an enigma, George Eastman moved the photography world ahead with amazing inventions. He was a philanthropist, second only to Rockefeller and Carnegie. Yet, the artifacts in his museum include the mounted head of an elephant he traveled to Africa to kill. Even his death by suicide seems odd—although his death certificate adds additional information. He left a note saying, “To my friends, my work is done—Why wait?”
In the central part of Croatia, close to the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina, lies the Plitvice National Park, one of Europe’s most famous and, by far the prettiest. This almost 300-square-foot area consists of a broad range of natural features, such as turquoise water, deep green forest surroundings, limestone canyons, and an impressive series of 16 cascading waterfalls.
The island republic of Cyprus, located in the Mediterranean Sea, offers everything that anyone could ask for: amazing forests, ancient archeological sites, breathtaking waterfalls, diverse nightlife, and beautiful beaches. Amongst all those things, Ayia Napa must be considered one of the most special places on the island. Although a lot of people compare the city of Ayia Napa, with its rich nightlife scene, to party-places like Ibiza or Mallorca, it has one particular landscape that must not be missed: The Ayia Napa Sea Caves. Located on the southeastern side of the island, close to Cape Greco National Forest Park, these caves were formed over centuries by the erosion of rocks caused by waves crashing against the cliffs.
During my road trip through the beautiful Balkan country of Albania, one specific destination was “number one” on my itinerary: Osum Canyon. In fact, my entire trip was inspired and initiated only by the desire to take photographs of this breath-taking natural attraction.
During this pandemic Erin created a challenge called #OurGreatIndoors. This challenge called for other creative and travelers who were under stay-at-home orders to create outdoor using common household items.
